Bathroom Vanity Sizes, Heights, and Depths: A Planning Guide, Plus Countertop Sizes and Materials

A standard bathroom vanity is typically 30–32 inches tall, about 21 inches deep, and comes in common widths from 24 to 72 inches. Comfort-height vanities are typically 34–36 inches tall, closer to kitchen counter height. Your door swing, toilet, and plumbing decide the right size, so measure the room before you shop.

Vanity size chart

Measurement Common size Best for
Height, traditional 30–32 in with top Children's and hall bathrooms
Height, comfort 34–36 in with top Primary bathrooms, taller adults
Height, accessible 34 in maximum to the rim Wheelchair users
Depth, standard About 21 in Standard bathrooms
Depth, narrow About 18 in Tight walkways, small bathrooms
Width, single sink 24, 30, 36, 48 in 24–30 in for powder rooms
Width, double sink 60 and 72 in 60 in gives two sinks comfortable room

Vanity height: which is right for you?

Traditional height (30–32 inches) suits children and shorter users.

Comfort height (34–36 inches) means less bending for taller adults, which makes it a common choice for primary bathrooms.

Accessible height: if anyone in the home uses a wheelchair, aim for a sink rim or counter no higher than 34 inches, at least 27 inches of knee clearance underneath, and the pipes under the sink covered or insulated. That usually means an open or wall-hung design rather than a standard base cabinet, and the drain and trap may need to be reset so they stay clear of the knee space.

How to get the finished height right

The cabinet height is not the finished height. Add the countertop, and the sink if it sits on top:

  • 3 cm stone top: adds about 1 1/4 inches.
  • 2 cm stone top: adds about 3/4 inch.
  • Vessel sink: the bowl sits on the counter. For a rim at about 36 inches with a 5-inch bowl and a 3 cm top, the cabinet should be about 30 inches tall. A vessel also needs a tall deck-mount faucet or a wall-mount faucet, and a wall-mount faucet means setting the water lines in the wall before it is closed.

Vanity width: fit the room, not the old vanity

Measure these four things before you choose a width:

  • The wall at the floor, middle, and top. Walls are rarely perfectly square. In an alcove, plan the cabinet slightly under the smallest number and close the gap with a filler strip or scribe molding, and have the stone top templated to the actual walls.
  • Door swing and the path past the toilet. In one bathroom we remodeled, we replaced a narrow entry door with a sliding barn door, which freed the space the door used to take.
  • Where the drain and water lines come out of the wall. The sink and the drawer stack cannot sit in the same spot.
  • Outlets, switches, and baseboards. Thick baseboards push a vanity forward and can cost you depth.

If you are torn between two widths, check the plumbing before the drawers. Drawers that look generous on a spec sheet lose space where the P-trap sits.

Vanity depth: the walkway decides

A 21-inch deep vanity fits a standard sink and full storage. In a narrow bathroom, an 18-inch vanity gives back 3 inches of walking space in front of the sink. Building code also sets minimum clearances around the toilet and in front of fixtures, so check them during the measure.

Floating vanities mount to the wall instead of the floor. They need solid wood blocking behind the drywall to carry the weight, and the drain and water lines have to come out of the wall, not up through the floor. On a slab foundation, moving a floor drain into the wall means cutting concrete, so check where your pipes come in before you choose a floating vanity.

Countertop sizes and material options

The vanity top usually overhangs the cabinet by about 1/2 to 1 inch on the front and on any open side, so a 21-inch deep cabinet takes a top about 22 inches deep. On a double vanity, place the sinks so each person keeps real counter space between and beside the bowls.

Material Strengths Upkeep
Quartz Nonporous, consistent color Wipe clean, no sealing
Granite Natural pattern, heat resistant Periodic sealing
Marble Classic veining, soft look Sealing; acids can etch it

If you choose natural stone, we encourage you to view your slab in person. See all options on our countertops page.

Common vanity sizing mistakes

  • Measuring the old vanity instead of the room. The old one may have been the wrong size.
  • Forgetting the top in the height. A 34-inch cabinet with a 3 cm top is a 35-inch vanity.
  • Choosing drawers before checking the drain. Plumbing decides the layout of the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard height of a bathroom vanity?

Traditional vanities are typically 30–32 inches tall with the countertop. Comfort-height vanities are typically 34–36 inches.

Usually not, for adults in a primary bathroom. For children, shorter users, or wheelchair users, 34 inches or lower works better.

About 21 inches for the cabinet and about 22 inches with the countertop. Narrow vanities are about 18 inches deep.

60 inches is a comfortable starting point. A 72-inch vanity gives each person more counter space.

Comfort height means less bending for taller adults, which is why it is offered more often.
